Medication and Fasting Instructions

Medication and fasting instructions vary by procedure and medical history. Follow the instructions provided directly by your surgeon, anesthesia team or SPOSC nurse. Contact the clinical team before surgery if instructions are unclear.

  • Bring an accurate list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements.
  • Ask specifically about blood thinners, diabetes medicines, weight-loss medicines and anti-inflammatory medicines.
  • Do not eat or drink outside the time limits provided by the care team.

Bathing and Infection Prevention

You may receive instructions for bathing or using a special cleanser before surgery. Follow the written directions exactly and avoid lotions, powders or products that are not permitted on the day of surgery.

What to Bring

  • Photo identification and insurance card
  • Current medication list and allergy information
  • Required braces, slings, crutches, walker or other mobility equipment
  • Comfortable clothing appropriate for the surgical area
