After Your Surgery

Find general recovery reminders, pain-management information, warning signs and follow-up expectations after discharge.

Recovery and Reminders

Follow the written instructions provided at discharge. Rest, hydration, activity, wound care, medication and follow-up requirements vary by procedure.

  • Have a responsible adult available for the period directed by the care team.
  • Do not drive, operate machinery, drink alcohol or make important decisions while affected by anesthesia or prescribed pain medicine.
  • Keep follow-up appointments and therapy visits.
  • Use braces, slings, dressings and mobility aids as instructed.

Postoperative Pain Relief

Some discomfort is expected after surgery. Use prescribed and approved over-the-counter medicines exactly as directed. Do not combine medicines or exceed labeled doses unless your clinical team has instructed you to do so.

Non-medication measures such as ice, elevation, positioning and movement may be recommended depending on the procedure.

Questions After Discharge

Use the contact instructions given to you at discharge for questions about recovery or follow-up care. Your surgical team will explain the appropriate contacts for your procedure.
